Babcock is the Royal Navy's strategic support partner for
its nuclear-powered submarine force. It works on all aspects of the
submarine:
- Hull and systems
- Nuclear reactor and secondary propulsion plant
- Combat system
- Strategic weapons system (in the case of the deterrent
submarines)
All engineering activities are the subject of extensive safety
and environmental justification, including independent regulatory
approval by both Government agencies and the Royal Navy itself. The
docks, facilities and cross-site services used in carrying out
these tasks are designed and justified to meet the rigorous
integrity and performance standards demanded by modern nuclear
safety requirements. These include earthquake resistance,
reliability and redundancy to ensure that all potential hazards are
reduced to levels that are as low as reasonably practicable.
Babcock's activities demand a highly skilled workforce for the
justification and execution of all activities on both the submarine
and the unique strategic infrastructure that is used for this
work.
