Babcock delivers naval based management services to the
Ministry of Defence through two high profile Warship Modernisation
Initiative (WSMI) contracts at Faslane and Devonport.
Both contracts rely on the use of seconded civil service and
Royal Navy personnel, working under Babcock management control,
demonstrating our commitment to collaborative working.
Since the contracts began, savings delivered at Clyde have
totalled £100 million and at Devonport savings equate to over £150
million.
Naval base management
Babcock is successfully maintaining and managing complex
building and utility distribution infrastructure, both
nuclear-related and non-nuclear. Babcock is also critically
responsible for the supply of power and other utility services,
management of radioactive waste streams and 24-hour berthing
services.
Logistics management
Managing logistics at Clyde we undertake warehousing and
transport operations at both Faslane and Coulport undertaking tasks
relating to storage, handling and distribution of goods and
materials from fasteners to major equipment.
At Devonport, Babcock also manages the Ministry of Defence's
south west hub from the site. We are responsible for the movement
of all defence material from the new Devonport distribution
facility, constructed during the first five year WSMI contract
period.
The successful provision of a high degree of inventory
visibility, accurate material accounting and a prompt,
cost-effective service have been fundamental to the success of
these contracts.
Other services
Providing strategic weapon support at Clyde, all In addition to
the above, Babcock also provides strategic weapons support. All
Clyde base ported submarines and some visiting submarines are
supported from the Clyde explosive handling jetty, where we conduct
platform maintenance and missile and weapon activities. This
involves specialised tasks carried out by the fleet maintenance and
calibration divisions on both the submarines themselves and the
strategic weapon systems; an essential and critical task.
We undertake a full range of maintenance activities at Coulport,
including those associated with vehicles, erection bridges, loading
tubes, hoisting equipment and transporters that support missile and
weapon storage and movements. Maintenance work also extends to the
transportation containers used for deterrent components.
On the Clyde, Babcock is one of just two companies that support
Rolls Royce in the provision of engineering support, and operation
and maintenance of the new NATO Submarine Rescue System. The system
is based at Faslane and is maintained and available for worldwide
deployment anywhere at 72 hours notice.
Our work on critical operations at naval bases demonstrates our
ability to deliver reliable services time and time again.
