Archie Bethel CBE
Chief Executive, Babcock Marine


Archie is Babcock Marine’s Chief Executive.

Archie joined Babcock in January 2004 with a background in the Oil & Gas and Energy sectors.  In 2007 he was appointed Chief Executive of Babcock Marine with responsibility for developing the Group’s Naval Support business worldwide.  He is a Vice President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Iain Urquhart
Finance Director, Babcock Marine


Iain is responsible for Corporate Services within Babcock Marine, covering the provision of financial, commercial, IT and legal support across the business.

Iain is a Chartered Accountant who worked on the external audit of parts of Babcock, including the Rosyth business, early in his career.  He joined Babcock in 1993 as project financial controller and subsequently occupied a number of positions that covered cost reduction, performance improvement and re-structuring following the Rosyth privatisation in 1997.  Iain was appointed finance director of Babcock Engineering Services in 2002 and also assumed responsibility for oversight of the Alstec businesses following their acquisition by Babcock in 2006.


Kevin Goodman
HR & Communications Director


Kevin is responsible for Human Resources and Communications within Babcock Marine.

Kevin joined Babcock in 1996, having previously held operational and senior HR roles within the defence, aviation and financial sectors.  In his time with Babcock he has held a variety of posts where he has had responsibility for employee resourcing, organisational development and change.  Until he joined Babcock Marine he was Deputy Managing Director of Babcock Defence Services.


John Howie
Managing Director Warships


John is responsible for the Warships business, including support activities, its design and technology group, the Division’s future aircraft carrier activities and manufacturing and port services activities at Rosyth.

John began his career in commercial and project roles in a regional aircraft business.  He then moved into the naval design and shipbuilding sector.  He joined Babcock in 2001 where he led the bids for the management services contract at HMNB Clyde and its subsequent extension.  In addition to his main role in Babcock Marine, John is responsible for management of the transition project that will integrate the former DML with Babcock’s other marine businesses.

Dennis Gilbert
Managing Director Strategic Development


Dennis is responsible for strategic development, covering strategic initiatives such as the Submarine Enterprise Collaborative Agreement, Transforming Surface Ship Support and developing the Babcock/MoD Terms of Business Agreement as well as Future Programmes and technical consultancy services.

Dennis was Chief Executive of DML, the company operating Devonport Dockyard, from 1996 onwards.  Prior to joining DML he had a 30 year career in naval submarine and ship building.

Roger Hardy
Managing Director Submarines


Roger is responsible for submarines, covering submarine-related operations and facilities at Devonport and in due course submarine-related outputs at Clyde and in the longer term the submarine disposal programme.

Roger was DML’s Submarine Director from 2005 and previously had responsibility for the performance and growth of the submarine business.  This included the management of the nuclear licensed site, the workshops and all submarine project, production and commissioning activity.


Phil Jones
Managing Director Naval Bases


Phil is responsible for Marine’s Naval Bases contracts, covering the two Warship Modernisation Initiative contracts at Devonport and Clyde and delivery of the industrial labour programme for surface ships at Devonport, the management of which will progressively transfer to the Warships unit.

Phil previously held senior management positions in design, RN ship refit projects and equipment manufacture/overhaul within DML as well as being responsible for the Devonport WSMI Naval Base contract and RN Surface Ship businesses.


Jon Hall
Managing Director of Babcock Integrated Technology


Jon is responsible for Babcock Integrated Technology, which provides platform design, integration & management services and high integrity systems to the marine, oil & gas and defence sectors worldwide.

Jon was previously Managing Director of Strachan & Henshaw Ltd., which became part of Babcock in 2008, having held senior roles in that business for 11 years. Before joining S&H he worked in the power and automotive sectors.
  

Roger Gillespie
Managing Director Equipment Solutions


Roger is responsible for the Equipment Solutions business, which includes supply chain management services, though-life equipment support contracts, weapon mounting overhaul and in-service support work and specialist military vehicle build activities.

Roger started his career as an officer in the British Army, moving into the offshore construction industry, before spending twenty years in the Oil and Gas sector in a number of procurement, logistics and management roles.  After working in supply chain consultancy, he joined Babcock in 2002.  He was initially Managing Director of BES’s Supply Chain Services business and latterly Deputy Managing Director of BES.

Craig Lockhart
Managing Director Clyde


Previously Fleet Services Director and Deputy Managing Director at HMNB Clyde, under the new organisational structure Craig is now Managing Director, Clyde.

Craig started his career with the MoD as a technical engineering apprentice and joined Babcock in 1987 as a member of its management streaming programme. On completion of his apprenticeship he worked in the nuclear engineering group working in research and development activities on nuclear refurbishment and repair techniques.  He later worked at a senior level on business process re-engineering activities.  He moved to the Clyde as a member of the core BNS team when it received its management services contract for this facility.
