With Babcock having a reputation for cutting edge technology and processes in manufacture and the fact that I wanted to work on challenging projects where I could learn from being in a team environment, the work here at Clyde was a big motivation for me to join.

When I started I thought I knew what to expect, but some of the things I find myself doing really amaze me. Sometimes I have to step back and remember that I’m working with nuclear submarines here! We’ve recently been showing a few of next year’s graduate intake around the base, and you can see their eyes light up.

In my first week, we toured every department – and everyone said to us ‘we want your ideas; any initiatives that might help improve things‘. To date I’ve worked on seven different projects, ranging from process improvement in motor generator rotor change on Vanguard Class Submarines to analysing what mobile phones were being used on the base. This started out as a small project for Procurement, who hadn’t had a graduate on placement before. The more I did for them, the more responsibility they gave me.

I’ve covered a lot of ground in every area I’ve worked in. There’s definitely scope for initiative, and a lot of interaction. The early responsibility also means that I now have useful contacts. The other day, my boss needed two drawings of the base. A couple of phone calls and I had them the next day!

The best part for me is actually getting to see the submarines at work – watching an eight-ton rotor change go through the port hatches of a Vanguard class submarine is an incredibly impressive feat of engineering. And the part I like least? The paperwork – it always catches up with you!

Everyone here shares pride in what we do, and contributes to create something greater than the sum of its parts. You’ll be questioned and challenged every day, but you’ll also be encouraged and valued as a member of the team. You won’t get a chance to work in an environment like this anywhere else in the world.
