A lot of people on my degree course went into banking, insurance and finance, but I wanted to do something industry-related. Babcock offered the CIMA qualification, so my choice pretty much made itself. Few graduate employers are involved in such a diverse range of business activities, over such a wide geographic area.

From the start, I was quickly given a lot of responsibility. I’ve been involved in several core areas of finance including group forecasting, daily cash management and maintaining the accounts for several of the Head Office companies. It was a steep learning curve, but there were always people around to ask if I was unsure. With my degree, I knew how a business is typically financed, but at Head Office you get to see the big picture – how the finance teams work together within the business to really make things happen.

Working at Group level, I’m in a good position to broaden my experience. The size of the company was one of the attractions of Babcock. In my role, I get to speak to everyone in finance and as a result, learn about the activities of all the other divisions – from Plymouth in the south west right up to Fife on the Scottish east coast.

The office here has a very relaxed feel – I was expecting it to be very different. People always take an interest in how you’re doing - even senior management always find time for a chat. The sense of working within such a strong and friendly team is extremely rewarding. The only downside for me is there never seem to be enough hours in the day.

If you’re prepared to put in the work, a graduate role here will definitely reward you in terms of expanding your career prospects. Babcock is a thriving company, and with finance being a core function, you quickly get to build strong relationships with a whole network of people right across the business.
