Hackney Building Schools for the Future

Our participation in the 10 year, £167 million contract for the Hackney Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project involves the refurbishment or rebuilding of six secondary schools and four special schools, plus subsequent facilities management and a £9.6 million investment in state-of the-art ICT (information and communications technology).

Several graduates on placement have been integral members of the team since the earliest bid stages and have gained exposure to every element, from negotiating with subcontractors and defining specifications to operational reporting and capturing BREEAM environmental assessment data.

In all aspects, graduates have been visible team members with clear responsibilities and client relationships. The complex and interdependent nature of the project work demands mature individuals who can be set challenging goals and then be relied upon to deliver them. Every graduate who has worked in this area has risen to the challenge and made a valuable contribution. All have grown personally as a result, and acquired new practical skills that will be of lasting benefit to their careers.

In fact, everybody benefits. Graduates are in turn valued for the innovations they can inject into established processes – especially when it comes to modern presentation media. In a business environment requiring detailed consultation with many different stakeholders – from teachers, governors, councillors and senior management teams to architects, builders, planners and parent
groups – the ability to communicate clearly and powerfully will play a big part in our future.
