Heathrow Terminal Operation System

When he joined our electrical team, David Johnson very quickly earned a reputation for technical skill and for enjoying a challenge. So after his final placement, becoming the acting project engineer on a project to improve the inter-terminal operation (ITO) system for baggage handling at Heathrow Terminal One – a combination of automated and manual handling and vehicular transport systems to transfer baggage between terminals – was seen as a natural step up in responsibility.

The project involved working with the end users, specialist design engineers and stakeholders to reduce manual handling and increase storage at one of the terminal’s unloading docks. With the support of his management team, David developed a solution, scoped and costed the works, managed the planning exercise and coordinated both the timing and resourcing, while ensuring the system was kept operational throughout. It was a remarkably assured achievement for someone spearheading his first major project.

Work of this nature gives graduates a chance to hone their all-round management skills, and understand how all the various pieces of a complex project fit together. The practicalities of planning a multi-phase exercise can only be learned first-hand. Graduates emerge from the experience with their knowledge and confidence greatly enhanced, equipped to take on greater responsibilities and further develop the skills that will make them our leaders of tomorrow.
