S80 Acoustic Countermeasure Launcher

Babcock’s S80 Acoustic Countermeasure (ACM) launcher – a scalable design that can be adapted to launch a range of anti-torpedo devices and can be rapidly installed outside a submarine’s pressure hull – is now in full development, with a prototype launcher currently being tested at Babcock’s discharge test facility in Bristol.

Customers for the launcher include the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, who propose to incorporate it into the Spanish Navy’s new S80 Submarine programme.

Throughout the project’s lifespan to date, graduates have been an integral part of the team, and have contributed to its evolution in a number of challenging areas, ranging from mechanical and electrical design through to fluid dynamics and trajectory modelling. First-hand experience of developing the design solutions required – and of taking direct responsibility for many key elements – has provided graduates with an excellent learning opportunity. Not only did they gain valuable exposure to their own field, but also to the disciplines of collaborating on a real product. There have also been times when their ability to apply a fresh perspective has been a clear benefit to the team.

Although the ACM project is on-course for completion, the potential outlined here is typical of many similar design projects that we undertake for clients all over the world. Graduates who join us next year can expect to enjoy equal scope for technical innovation and personal development.
