Nuclear Decomissioning

For almost 30 years BNS Nuclear Services has successfully carried out decommissioning design study and practical decommissioning contracts for the majority nuclear facilities in the UK.

Meeting our clients’ individual requirements is always our top priority. Our team of 400 highly qualified engineers & design specialists has extensive experience in the complete decommissioning of nuclear equipment. Safety and quality are paramount through our decommissioning work and particularly during the site work when hazardous operations are inevitable. Our company and site procedures require all hazardous operations and their consequences to be fully assessed and identified by means of formal quality, planning and risk assessments.

Testimonial
“The HERALD Reactor Decommissioning project...has been a very challenging, interesting project encompassing all aspects of engineering, decommissioning and demolition. This was all achieved with zero lost time accidents and minimal commercial issues. I would like to commend your team for their professional approach to the entire project. Despite many difficulties a positive team spirit has prevailed (both AWE and ALSTEC), and a good working relationship has been enjoyed by both sides. I am sure we will be sharing the successful delivery of future projects.” Jim Robertson, Facility Manager Herald Complex."

Case Study
Major projects include decommissioning of the Herald Reactor at AWE. This project involved the removal of all redundant plant, equipment, services, tanks and structures; partial decommissioning of the Herald Reactor and then placement of the reactor under a controlled, dry environment.

BNS Nuclear Services have also planned and undertaken the complete decommissioning and demolition to Brownfield site of the production facility at AWE Cardiff and more recently the A25 Gantry Decommissioning project also at AWE.

We have also undertaken extensive decommissioning roles on projects including: Dounreay Fast Reactor - Breeder Fuel Removal, Hunterston ‘A’ and Hinkley A ILW Stores, Dounreay Conditioned ILW Store.
